How on Earth is 2016 almost over?! I feel like it just started!
It really seems to be true what they say – time really flies by as you get older. In preparation for your fun New Year’s Eve plans (no idea what I’m doing yet…probably falling asleep on the couch), I wanted to put together a few simple New Year’s headbands ideas for you. I’ll share three different, very easy DIYs you can make to celebrate the night away. Personally, I don’t wear usually hats, so headbands are the ideal alternative for me.
Any of these options are pretty easy to make with some easy-to-find supplies, and you can switch up the colors to match your style. I’m all about the classic black and gold combo for New Year’s Eve, so I used a lot of sparkly gold pipe cleaners and cardstock to make mine. The first uses gold stars to make a shooting star piece, the second gives you the illusion of a mini party hat and the third uses large letters to spell out 2017. Have fun with it!
Mini Party Hat Headband
Supplies:
- Plain headband
- Glittery cardstock
- Feathery garland
- Hot glue gun
Step 1: Roll the metallic cardstock into a cone shape at the corner. Use a pencil to approximately outline where to cut the cone (about a 3-inch tall cone).
Step 2: Unroll the paper and cut along the curved line. Roll and unroll the paper as needed to trim the paper to your desired height and shape.
Step 3: Glue the ends of the paper together and set aside to dry and cool. Glue the bottom of the hat to the headband, slightly tilted to one side rather than in the middle. Apply glue heavily if needed and hold in place until it dries.
Step 4: Wrap the garland around the bottom of the hat you’ve created to measure how long it needs to be and cut. Also cut a 1-inch piece of garland for the top. Glue the piece of garland around the bottom of the paper hat, and glue the small piece to the tip of the hat. Let dry completely and remove any glue strings.
Gold Star Headband
Supplies:
- Plain headband
- Thin gold or black wire
- Various sized gold stars (thick cardstock or chipboard)
- Hot glue gun
- Gold pipe cleaners
- Scissors
Step 1: Cut the wire into various sized pieces, about 4 in – 6 in. I cut 5 different pieces.
Step 2: Starting in the middle, wrap the wire several time around the headband to secure it (I used the longest in the middle). Repeat with the other pieces, spacing them out over the top of the headband.
Step 3: Bend the wires slightly in different directions and hot glue the wires to the backs of the stars (again, spacing the sizes). Double up the stars on longer pieces of wire if you desire. At this point, they should look like shooting stars!
Step 4: Starting about 1/4 of the way up the headband, wrap pipe cleaners around it all the way to the other side of the headband (weave around the wires), about 1/4 from the bottom. You want to avoid the bottom because the pipe cleaners could irritate your ears when wearing the headband. Note, the pipe cleaners keeps the wire from irritating your head but are otherwise optional.
Sparkly 2017 Headband
Supplies:
- Chipboard numbers
- Black paint
- Gold glitter
- Hot glue gun
- Feathery garland
Step 1: If desired, paint the chipboard numbers for 2017 (or whatever you want it to say) and let dry. Paint a second coat for good measure.
Step 2: While still wet, sprinkle with gold glitter and let dry. Repeat with the backside of the numbers if desired.
Step 3: Once completely dry, glue the bottoms of the letters to the middle of the headband with hot glue. Let dry and remove any glue strings.
Step 4: Glue the feathery garland to the headband, applying it in front of the numbers without covering them too much. To avoid irritation, only glue the garland to the middle of the the headband, not the bottom 1/4 of it.
And there you have it! Any of these are fairly easy ways to bring in the new year! I think my favorite is the party hat ?
What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?!
