It’s time to get into all things Halloween this month! This DIY PEZ container costume (and PEZ candy!) is probably my new favorite costume! How many times have I said that about a project?? Fun fact about me: I started collecting PEZ containers when I was a kid, and my parents kept the collection going. Now, there are boxes and boxes and boxes of PEZ containers displayed on the walls of parents’ house! I even made a PEZ container costume when I was in middle school, so it was fun to recreate the Halloween costume as an adult.
Supplies:
- Cardboard box (large enough to fit over your body)
- Craft knife
- Solid colored vinyl or removable wrapping paper
- Craft foam
- Paint, matching your vinyl
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Belting, coordinationg color
- Glue gun
- Rectangular floral foam
- Paint
How to Make a PEZ Container Costume Out of a Box
Step 1: Make sure the box fits your body! You will need it to at least fit your torso and allow you enough space to walk. Then cut the top and bottom flaps of the box.
Step 2: Wrap the entire outside of the PEZ container costume box with the vinyl or removable wrapping paper. Trim the vinyl along the top and bottom and fold inside of the box to make clean edges.
Note, if your material isn’t sticking to the inside when folded, I recommend adding packing tape on top so that it sticks.
Step 3: Cut large PEZ letters out of craft foam. Measure them along the thinner side of the box to make sure they will fit.
Step 4: Once cut, paint the letters so that they match the vinyl. Let dry and paint a second coat if needed.
Step 5: When the letters are dry, cut the letters into pieces about 1 inch thick. Follow the pattern of the letter and keep all pieces together.
Step 6: Glue the PEZ container letters vertically to the smaller side of the box. Leave small spaces between each piece of the PEZ letters. Then use a small paintbrush to to fill in any unpainted areas of the letters.
Step 7: Cut another piece of fun foam in a ‘W’ pattern with a lot of space on the side. (see photo) Paint the same color as the other foam. Then glue to the bottom edge of the box along the same side as the letters.
Step 8: Put on the PEZ container costume and hold it where you want it to set on you. Ask a friend to help you measure how long to make the belting straps. Add at least 3 additional inches so that there’s room to fold the belting.
Step 9: Use the craft knife to cut slits about 1-1/2 inches from the top edge for the straps. Repeat on both sides. Thread the belting through the slits and glue to the other side of the belting.
Step 10: Lastly, make the PEZ candy accessory! Use the craft knife to curve the edges and carve PEZ on top. Then give it at least two coats of your desired paint.
That’s how you can make a PEZ container costume for Halloween! Use your favorite colors and you can use makeup and wigs to try out new looks. My middle school version of this costume featured terrifying clown makeup…I still don’t want to think about it 😂 Happy Halloween crafting!
